All program areas of the department need volunteer help on a regular basis and for various projects throughout the year. Volunteer opportunities are available to help with the department's many special events including Orange Jubilee, health fairs, registration fairs, Safety Town, beautification projects and more.

Volunteers are also recruited to serve on the Orange Community Education & Recreation Commission, on advisory councils and for other task or focus groups. Click here find out more information on the OCE&R Commission.

Several employment opportunities are available with the department including year-round and seasonal positions. Core staff positions may have occasional vacancies and those will be advertised in the news and/or posted at the department's office sites and website. These include programming staff, early childhood teachers, support and operations staff, supervisory staff and before and after school childcare staff. Lifeguards and swim instructor positions are available year-round and summer camp directors and counselor positions are available during the summer.

Please note: A criminal BCI & FBI background check including fingerprints is required prior to employment (and for certain volunteer opportunities). Background checks are paid for by the potential employee and  are scheduled after applicants are interviewed.

Volunteer
LIONS CAMP COUNSELOR-IN-TRAINING PROGRAM
Volunteer program for youth currently in grades 7-9 (school year ending June 2017). Take charge of your summer! Learn new skills and have fun! Learn about responsibility, teamwork, safety, and the best child supervision techniques while assisting with all camp events including swimming, sports, arts and crafts and field trips. Gain skills to become competent counselors or trained volunteers working with children. This program gives youth the opportunity to receive in-depth training and practice supervision techniques while assisting with a camp group in our Lions/Cubs Camp. You will receive community service hours and a certificate upon completion of the program.

NOTE: To be considered for the CIT program, teens must be available for the entire six week camp, camp in-service week, and attend (with a parent) an orientation meeting on Tuesday, April 4 from 6:30-7:30pm at the Pepper Pike Learning Center. Please call Youth Department at 216-831-8601 x5100 or x5101 to save your space. Applicants must bring a completed application (signed by the parent), and a letter of intent (statement of why you would like to be a CIT). Download forms attached to this posting. Interviews will be done at the orientation. Acceptance will be based upon the personal interview, references and availability of positions. All students will be notified before May 1.

Safety Town Volunteers
The planning for the 2017 Safety Town Program is well underway. We are looking for teen volunteers to help with the program. Volunteers will work directly with the children, teaching them various important safety lessons. Safety Town will run from Monday, July 31st through Friday, August 4th. Volunteers must commit to working the entire week, including a morning and afternoon session. The shift will be daily from 8:30 am until 4:30 pm (this does include a lunch break).

We will hold a required training session on Thursday, July 27th from 10:00-12:00 pm. All Safety Town volunteers are required to attend this training session so that we can discuss the format for this year’s program and prepare the lessons for the children.

Officer Todd and Betsy Ploenzke will be running this year’s Safety Town program. We always have a great group of volunteers and we hope you will be able to join us for the 2017 program! Enclosed is a volunteer application and reference forms. Please complete the forms and return them to the Early Childhood Center office, located in the Pepper Pike Learning Center by Friday, March 24th.

PAL Program
PAL (Play and Lead) is our after school leadership program designed for students in grades 6-8 to learn about responsibility, teamwork, safety, child development and develop leadership skills while working with the Open Door/Youth program. Under the guidance of Youth and Open Door teachers and staff, students in the PAL Program will volunteer 1-2 days a week interacting with younger children – participating in and designing activities, playing games, reading stories, assisting with dismissal, having snack and escorting children to other areas within the PPLC facility. Acceptance will be based on the personal interview, application, references and availability of positions. Students must maintain a regular schedule. Y.E.S. Club - Youth Engaged In Service

Do you want to make a difference in your community while earning some volunteer hours? The Youth Engaged in Service Club (Y.E.S Club) is a volunteer program for students in grades 6-12. Volunteers are needed for OCE&R Special Events and after school sports and classes. Cost is free however pre-registration is required. Early Childhood Summer Camp and/or Enrichment Camp Instructor

Orange Early Childhood is a unique, dynamic and comprehensive Early Childhood program, managed by Orange Community Education & Recreation and located on the campus of the Orange School District. We are currently seeking an energetic, enthusiastic and inspired instructors to co-teach in our summer camp classrooms. The ideal candidate will possess or be working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Early Childhood Education (or related field) and have experience working with young children in a preschool setting.

Instructors are needed for various positions throughout the summer (June 5th-July 28th). There are both full-time and part-time positions available.

Part Time
Open Door - Group Leader

Orange Community Education & Recreation announces a part time opening for an experienced individual to join the youth team working in the Open Door before and after school program.  Candidate must possess strong customer service commitment and the desire to collaborate with a dedicated and enthusiastic team of community education and recreation professionals in public school setting year round.  Ability to plan and implement youth activities before and after school. Knowledge of child development and a solid commitment to serving children and families. Should be adept in human relations with peoples of all ages and exhibit positive personality traits including enthusiasm, initiative and professionalism.  Certificate in First Aid and CPR and knowledge in the identification of communicable diseases and child abuse preferred.  School year part time position Monday-Friday 7:00-9:00am and/or 3:00-6:00pm, summer hours optional; other times as scheduled.  See attached file for complete job description.  Applications are available on line at www.orangerec.com

Orange Lions Camp Counselors
The Orange Community Education & Recreation Department announces a seasonal summer opening for Orange Lions Camp Assistant Counselor. Hours are Monday through Friday 8:30am-3:30pm plus additional field trip and planning time. The position reports to the Orange Lions Camp Head Counselor. The ideal candidate will have paid or volunteer experience working with children, and will demonstrate strong leadership, supervision, and program development skills. CPR & First Aid certification is required (training provided if needed). Responsibilities include to ensure the safety of all campers; assist Camp Counselor with planning of weekly activities; supervise, engage, and maintain discipline of all campers in group.
